Bacău County

The only county in the region hosting the headquarters of two nationally significant Romanian companies and, at the same time, an aeronautical industry with a long tradition. With the opening of the southern sections of the A7 motorway, Bacău becomes Moldavia’s first major road node.

Economy

Economic profile

Trade accounts for almost half of the county’s turnover, followed by industry and construction. Beneath this structure, however, lie two rare features: the headquarters of Romania’s largest DIY retailer and an integrated aeronautical industry, from aerostructures to civil maintenance and defence systems.

Infrastructure

Connectivity and access

A7 motorwaythe Adjud–Răcăciuni and Răcăciuni–Bacău sections have been largely completed, with opening announced for the end of August 2026. It is the most significant change to the county’s logistics position in decades.
„George Enescu” International Airport451,036 passengers in 2025, with routes operated by DAN AIR, Wizz Air and AeroItalia. In 2026 Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Paris-Beauvais, Treviso and Larnaca were added, plus extra frequencies to London Luton and Brussels.
Roads and railwaythe E85 European road crosses the county from south to north, parallel to the A7; Bacău is a station on Main Line 500 Bucharest–Suceava.

Education and the labour market

„Vasile Alecsandri” University of Bacău brings together five faculties — Engineering, Letters, Sciences, Economic Sciences and Movement, Sport and Health Sciences — with 6,260 students in the 2025–2026 academic year, of whom 3,330 in the first year. The county has 119,083 employees, an average gross wage of RON 6,146 (87.3% of the national average) and an unemployment rate of 2.6%.

Heritage

Tourism and culture

Slănic-Moldova, a spa resort with mineral springs whose first bathing establishment dates from 1827, and Târgu Ocna, where the salt mine hosts Europe’s largest underground sanatorium at a depth of 130 metres, are the main landmarks. Bogdana Monastery, founded in 1660, is the county’s largest, while the manor at Tescani preserves the memory of George Enescu, whose name the airport also bears.

Quality of life

Why live here

Bacău combines a comfortably sized city with full services and quick access to the mountains, the salt mine and spa resorts. From 2026, the motorway brings it to about three hours from Bucharest.

Healthcare

The County Emergency Hospital serves more than 600,000 inhabitants and is modernising its operating block, with new orthopaedics and neurosurgery wards, and its emergency department. Târgu Ocna hosts Europe’s largest underground sanatorium, 130 metres deep, for respiratory conditions.

Education

„Vasile Alecsandri” University with five faculties and more than 6,200 students, national colleges with consistent olympiad results and a solid network of technical high schools linked to local industry.

Culture

The „Bacovia” Municipal Theatre, the „Mihail Jora” Philharmonic, the „Iulian Antonescu” Museum Complex, the „Victor Anestin” Astronomical Observatory and the manor at Tescani, which preserves the memory of George Enescu.

Leisure

Slănic-Moldova, a spa resort with mineral springs since 1827, the Târgu Ocna salt mine, the Valea Muntelui area for hiking and agritourism, and the island and reservoir within the city.
